Maps - Maroon 5

Maps is het openingsnummer van Maroon 5's laatste album V.

Zonder intro begint gelijk het eerste couplet, met als begeleiding een hi-hat

en een gitaar riff van een cleane elektrische gitaar.

De riff bestaat uit drie akkoorden (A, B en C#m) waarvan steeds de grondtoon, kwint en terts wordt gespeeld. Groepjes van drie noten, dus. Omdat ze allemaal even lang duren (tel), verschuift het patroon binnen de 4/4 maat en komt de laatste noot op de eerste tel van maat 2,

waarin nog een versiering volgt voordat de riff wordt herhaald.

Je kan de riff het best beginnen met je ringvinger en pink in vakje 2.

Deze vingers kan je dan doorschuiven naar vakje 4 voor het B akkoord, waarvan je de grondtoon pakt met je wijsvinger. Daarna schuif je de wijsvinger en ringvinger door voor het C#m akkoord, waar je middelvinger de terts pakt in vakje 5.

Dezelfde riff vind je ook in de refreinen, alleen wordt het daar bijna overstemd door de dance-achtige productie. Tussen couplet en refrein vinden we op twee plaatsen in het nummer een zogenaamd pre chorus, een stukje dat naar het refrein toe leidt.

Dit heeft wel wat weg van een Police song en bestaat uit de akkoorden F#m, G# en G#/B#.

De basnoot van het laatste akkoord is de terts van G#, theoretisch heet dat dan een B#, dat eigenlijk dezelfde noot is als C.

In dit pre chorus hoor je geen gitaar, maar ik heb er wel een partijtje van gemaakt, omdat het altijd leuker is om mee te spelen dan vier maten stil te zijn.

Trouwens, Maps kan je ook prima als singer-songwriter op een akoestische gitaar spelen, al zou ik dan wel de refreinen met een slagje doen om wat meer dynamiek in het nummer te brengen.
